Whether you love the classic combination of tart apples coated in rich, buttery caramel or you’re a fan of more creative toppings, there’s no denying that caramel apples are a must-have fall treat. Today, I’m excited to share some fun ideas on how to celebrate National Caramel Apple Day, along with a super easy recipe to make your own caramel apples at home. So grab your favorite apples, and let’s get started!
A Sweet History of Caramel Apples
Caramel apples have been a fall favorite for decades, and their history dates back to the early 1950s when a creative candy maker named Dan Walker dipped apples into melted caramel as a way to use up leftover candy from Halloween. Since then, the simple treat has evolved into a sweet sensation, with endless flavor combinations and decorative options. From classic caramel to gourmet creations with chocolate, nuts, and sprinkles, there’s no limit to how you can enjoy this fall favorite!
How to Celebrate National Caramel Apple Day
There are so many fun and delicious ways to celebrate National Caramel Apple Day, whether you’re enjoying them at a fall festival, making them at home with your family, or indulging in some pre-made goodies from your local market. Here are a few creative ways to enjoy caramel apples this October 31st:
1. Host a Caramel Apple Party
Invite friends and family over for a caramel apple party! Set up a DIY caramel apple bar with a variety of apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Fuji work great) and an assortment of toppings. Think crushed peanuts, mini chocolate chips, candy sprinkles, toffee bits, and even sea salt. Let everyone dip and decorate their own apples to create a sweet, customizable treat.
Good Thyme Gal Tip: Make sure to have some wax paper on hand so guests can set their caramel apples down while they cool. You can even provide little gift bags so they can take their creations home.
2. Go Gourmet with Your Caramel Apples
If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, why not elevate your caramel apple game? Try drizzling your caramel-dipped apples with melted dark or white chocolate, or roll them in chopped pretzels or crushed cookies for an extra layer of flavor. You can even experiment with flavored caramels, like salted caramel or bourbon caramel, for a grown-up twist on the classic treat.
Good Thyme Gal Tip: For a fun fall theme, roll your caramel apples in crushed graham crackers and top them with mini marshmallows to create a “s'mores” caramel apple.
3. Get the Kids Involved
Making caramel apples is a fun activity for kids of all ages. Let your little ones help by dipping the apples in caramel and sprinkling on their favorite toppings. Not only will they love decorating their apples, but they’ll also enjoy eating the sweet, sticky results! Just be sure to supervise the caramel-making process to keep little hands safe around the hot caramel.
Let’s Get Dipping!
National Caramel Apple Day is a fun, tasty way to celebrate the flavors of fall, and there’s no better way to get into the autumn spirit than by making your own caramel apples. Whether you’re hosting a party, getting creative with gourmet toppings, or enjoying the process with your kids, caramel apples are a sweet, nostalgic treat that everyone loves.
Good Thyme Gal’s Easy Caramel Apple Recipe
To help you celebrate National Caramel Apple Day in style, I’m sharing my go-to recipe for Classic Caramel Apples. This recipe is simple, delicious, and guaranteed to be a hit with your family and friends. Let’s dive in!
Ingredients
6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work great)
6 wooden sticks (popsicle sticks or chopsticks will do)
1 cup brown sugar
½ cup unsalted butter
½ cup light corn syrup
1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
½ tsp sea salt (optional)
Toppings of your choice (crushed nuts, sprinkles, chocolate chips, etc.)
Cooking Instructions
1. Wash the apples thoroughly and dry them completely. Remove the stems and insert a wooden stick into the top of each apple. Place the apples on a parchment-lined baking sheet and pop them into the fridge to chill while you make the caramel. Chilling helps the caramel stick better!
2. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the brown sugar, corn syrup, and sweetened condensed milk, stirring constantly. Continue to cook the mixture until it reaches 235°F on a candy thermometer, also known as the "soft ball" stage. This should take about 10-15 minutes. If you don’t have a candy thermometer, you can test by dropping a bit of caramel into cold water—it should form a soft ball.
3. Once the caramel reaches the right temperature, remove it from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and sea salt (if using). Let the caramel cool slightly for a few minutes before dipping the apples.
4. Remove the apples from the fridge. Hold each apple by the stick and dip it into the caramel, swirling to coat the entire apple. Let the excess caramel drip off, then place the apple back onto the parchment-lined baking sheet. If you’re adding toppings, this is the time to roll or sprinkle them onto the wet caramel.
5. Allow the caramel apples to set at room temperature for about 30 minutes before serving. For faster results, pop them in the fridge to speed up the process.
6. Your delicious, homemade caramel apples are ready to be devoured. Wrap them in cellophane and tie with ribbon for a festive treat, or enjoy them right away with friends and family.
As always, I’d love to see your caramel apple creations! Be sure to share your photos with the Good Thyme Gal community by using the hashtag #GoodThymeGal and #NationalCaramelAppleDay on social media.
