Happy National Pocky Day! If you’re a fan of this beloved Japanese snack, today is November 11th, 2024, the day to indulge and celebrate! With their crunchy biscuit stick dipped in chocolate and available in a rainbow of flavors, Pocky has become a snack staple around the world. From classic chocolate to matcha green tea, strawberry, and even fun seasonal flavors, there’s a Pocky for everyone. And while the store-bought versions are fantastic, there’s something extra fun and satisfying about making your own.

What’s the Story Behind National Pocky Day?

original pocky

National Pocky Day, celebrated every year on November 11, takes its inspiration from the shape of Pocky sticks, which resemble the ones and elevens in “11/11.” Created by Glico in Japan in 1966, Pocky was originally a chocolate-covered biscuit snack with one end left bare, making it easy to hold. This practical design and delicious flavor quickly made it a favorite treat across Japan and eventually around the world.

Pocky has become a symbol of joy and sharing—whether you’re passing around a box with friends, enjoying it as a quick snack, or getting creative with new flavors, it’s a treat that’s all about fun and connection. National Pocky Day is a celebration of that joy, so today is the perfect excuse to enjoy and even make your own!

Why Try Homemade Pocky?

While the store-bought versions are convenient and delicious, making Pocky at home allows you to personalize the flavors and have fun with different toppings. You can dip them in white chocolate, dark chocolate, or even matcha-flavored coating and add sprinkles, nuts, or dried fruit for a unique twist. Plus, homemade Pocky makes a lovely gift or party treat that you can share with family and friends!

Ingredients

*For the Biscuit Sticks

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, softened

  • 1/4 cup water

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (or almond extract for a different flavor)

*For the Chocolate Coating

  • 1 cup bittersweet or semi-sweet chocolate, chopped

  • 1 tbsp coconut oil (for a smooth, glossy finish)

*Toppings (optional)

  • Crushed almonds or pistachios

  • Rainbow sprinkles

  • Shredded coconut

  • Freeze-dried strawberry pieces

Cooking Instructions

1.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the softened butter and mix until the texture resembles fine crumbs.

Add water and vanilla extract, mixing until a dough forms. Knead gently until the dough is smooth, then cover and let it rest for about 10 minutes.

2.

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Roll out the dough on a floured surface until it’s about 1/4-inch thick. Cut the dough into long, thin strips (about 1/8-inch wide). Roll each strip between your hands to make a smooth, thin stick shape.

Place each stick on the baking sheet, spacing them apart slightly.

3.

Bake for about 12–15 minutes, or until the sticks are golden brown and crisp. Let them cool completely before moving to the next step.

4.

In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chopped chocolate and coconut oil. Microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring each time, until the chocolate is melted and smooth.

5.

Once the biscuit sticks are cool, dip each stick halfway into the melted chocolate, allowing any excess to drip off.

Lay the chocolate-dipped sticks on a parchment-lined baking sheet. While the chocolate is still wet, sprinkle on your desired toppings—crushed nuts, sprinkles, or freeze-dried strawberries all add a fun and colorful touch!

6.

Place the dipped sticks in the fridge for about 10 minutes, or until the chocolate has set. Once set, your homemade Pocky is ready to enjoy!
