Celebrate National Ravioli Day on March 20th with Good Thyme Gal! 🍝🎉

Hello, food lovers! It’s time to celebrate another delicious food holiday! March 20th, 2025, is National Ravioli Day, and I can’t think of a better excuse to indulge in these delightful pasta pockets filled with goodness. Whether you’re a fan of traditional cheese-filled ravioli or like to get adventurous with creative fillings, today is all about honoring this comforting Italian classic.
Ravioli has a rich history that goes way back to 14th-century Italy. Originally served as a luxurious dish for nobility, it quickly gained popularity and found its way into the hearts (and kitchens) of people everywhere. From creamy ricotta to savory meats and even sweet dessert versions, ravioli has evolved into a versatile dish that suits just about any craving. And the best part? You don’t need to be a professional chef to make it at home!
Why Celebrate National Ravioli Day?

Ravioli is more than just pasta — it’s a symbol of togetherness and love. It’s one of those dishes that brings people around the table, sharing laughter and good food. Plus, making ravioli from scratch is easier than you might think and a perfect way to spend time with loved ones.
But if you’re looking for a more affordable and equitable way to enjoy this delicious dish, I’ve got you covered with a simple, budget-friendly ravioli recipe that uses pantry staples and fresh, accessible ingredients. Let’s get cooking!
Easy Homemade Ravioli Recipe 🧀🍝
Ingredients:
For the Dough:
2 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
2 large eggs
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons olive oil
2-3 tablespoons water (if needed)
For the Filling:
1 cup ricotta cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tablespoon fresh basil or parsley, chopped (optional)
For the Sauce:
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
1 teaspoon dried oregano
Salt and pepper to taste
Fresh basil for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
1. Make the Dough:
On a clean surface or large mixing bowl, make a mound with the flour and create a well in the center.
Crack the eggs into the well, add the olive oil and salt. Using a fork, gradually mix the eggs into the flour.
Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough feels too dry, add a tablespoon of water at a time.
Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.
2. Prepare the Filling:
In a medium bowl, mix the ricotta, Parmesan, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and herbs. Set aside.
3. Roll and Fill the Dough:
After the dough has rested, divide it in half. Roll each half into thin sheets, about 1/8 inch thick.
Spoon small portions of the filling (about 1 teaspoon) onto one sheet, leaving about 1 inch between each.
Place the second sheet of dough over the filling. Press around the edges to seal, removing any air.
Cut the ravioli using a knife or ravioli cutter.
4. Cook the Ravioli:
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
Gently drop the ravioli in and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until they float to the top.
5. Make the Sauce:
In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat.
Add garlic and sauté until fragrant.
Pour in the crushed tomatoes, add oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10-15 minutes.
6. Serve and Enjoy:
Drain the ravioli and gently toss with the sauce.
Garnish with fresh basil and a sprinkle of Parmesan.
Why Homemade Ravioli is a Great Choice
Homemade ravioli not only tastes better, but it’s also a more equitable option. Making it from scratch allows you to control the ingredients, reduce food waste, and support local producers when buying fresh ingredients. Plus, it’s a fun activity that brings people together in the kitchen!
